Free diving is one of the most unforgiving sports in existence. The extreme conditions encountered deep underwater, without oxygen, place the human body under immense physiological stress.
A significant proportion of free diving accidents are caused by respiratory distress. Ascending too quickly results in permanent lung damage; ascending too slowly can be fatal. This razor-thin margin captivated us.

We designed three products, each taking a distinct approach to improving safety within the sport. The use of Gravity Sketch, we were able to design in virtual reality. It helped us to stay in context by building a digital replication of how a free diving scenario would undergo.
Ergonomic fins. The design redistributes the load from the ankle joint to the leg, actively preventing cramps during the dive.
Emergency Airbag. Safely returns the diver to the surface in a critical situation. Linked to the diving watch, the airbag deploys automatically when the heart rate drops below a critical threshold.
Resuscitation Floaty. The design supports the resuscitation process, including reanimation, while keeping the diver safely above the surface at all times.

Through an informant dialogue with ON Running, we were able to align closely the brands characteristics. Direct access to ON Running experts allowed us to ask precise questions around design direction, insights that informed our styling phase, where we placed emphasis on translating the brand's design signatures into each product.
